Transforming the British Council’s cultural reach through digital
The British Council wanted to use digital technology to bring culture to a much larger audience. We were interested in how that move to digital can turn an audience member into a creator. So we worked with Kutiman, the remix master of YouTube. What if you could play Kutiman - and make your own mix?
Inspired by Kutiman's Thru the City series, we used recordings of musicians from Tel Aviv, playing whatever they wanted, all in the same time and key. Then, through some HTML5 magic, we enabled the public to create a brand new track from this material. This turned devices into instruments: making music became a case of just tapping a phone.
After the success of the Tel Aviv site, we collaborated with the British Council to bring the Mix The City experience to many more locations around the world, including Istanbul, the Balkans, Moscow, Mannheim and Hamburg. More will follow in the near future.
Mix the City has reached hundreds of thousands users in dozens of countries, and was built with our friends at Roll Studio. Check out some of our mixes below, and create your own at www.mixthecity.com.
