Since 2009, Kutiman has been the remix master of YouTube; creating stunning songs from a variety of video samples. What if you could play Kutiman - and make your own mix?
The British Council & The Space wanted to answer this question. Digital tools enable art to become participatory; we can move from viewing to making. By taking the musical genius of Kutiman and adding some magical web technology, we developed a platform to do just that.
Mix the City is a continuation of Kutiman's Thru the City series, in which he records musicians from a city - simply playing what they want, but all in the same time and key - and then creating a brand new track from this material. To move forward into interactive, Kutiman turned back to his home town of Tel Aviv. The result is a totally unique portrait of a fascinating diverse city, encapsulating the broad range of communities that make it up.
We worked closely with Kutiman to understand how his art process works, before partnering up with top web developers Roll Studio to bring it to life. We focused on the idea of turning your device into an instrument - whether on your computer, phone or tablet, making music should be a case of tapping; think a piano or drum machine. It should be impossible to get wrong and easy to record and share.
After the initial success of the Tel Aviv site, we collaborated with the British Council to bring the Mix The City experience to many more locations around the world including Istanbul, The Balkans, Moscow, Mannheim and Hamburg, with many more to follow in the near future.
