Taking local sounds global with an interactive mixing platform

The British Council brings cultural experiences to millions through touring art shows, orchestras and companies. But they wanted to go a step further. We asked ourselves - what if we invited audiences to create their own music, collaborating with musicians around the world?

Mix the City allows anyone with a phone to create an original track by mixing 24 samples, using an intuitive experience on their computer, tablet, or phone. We invited local musicians to work with artists such as Kutiman, Ghostpoet and The 2 Bears to create samples. The musicians themselves represent global cities - we started in Tel Aviv, but the project has now scaled to 13 cities including Katowice, Moscow, Istanbul, Kolkata, Hamburg, Mumbai and Harare.

Mix The City both delivers the British Council’s mission of cultural exchange, and is also proving popular with visitors. To date, over 850k users from more than 200 countries worldwide have accessed Mix The City.
